Our Story
The formation of Valley O&P is the result of two people from two different generations, two nations coming together because they share a very similar vision for patient and employee care. I grew up in Sri-Lanka and moved to North Carolina with my parents as a young teen. After completing high school, I decided to study Biology at NC State University with the hopes of becoming a field biologist. I graduated from NC State in 2004. However, during my undergraduate years, I discovered that despite how much I loved working with animals, I loved working with people more. After a missions trip to a Kenyan orphanage and home for disabled children, my eyes were opened to a world that many of us do not really get to interact with. I heard a new calling and decided that I wanted to be a part of a world where I help solve issues involving the limb loss and bracing community. I decided to study prosthetics and attended California State University and graduated in 2006. I completed my prosthetics residency in North Carolina with a large prosthetics company in a cooperate setting. After the completion of my residency, I worked in various work settings that included, cooperate, large business settings and small business settings.
My favorite job was working for Napa Valley Prosthetics and Orthotics. I would have never left Napa, CA if not for the need to return back to family in Virginia. In Virginia, I dreamed of working at a place like Napa Valley prosthetics where not only the patients were like family but also the employees felt loved and cared for. I dreamed of a place where patients’ needs and interests were primary. I dreamed of a place where employees felt belonged and rewarded for their work. After working for two prosthetic companies in VA, for almost 8 years I saw that what I had dreamed was only possible if I opened a practice of my own. During the same time, I ran into Sarah Lane, CO, who had a very similar vision to mine. Even before I met her, I heard great things about Sarah’s work for many years. She had over 30 years of bracing experience! Sarah too had worked for many years in various practices and had opened her own practice in Winchester over 10 years ago. After several meetings with Sarah, I saw her genuine character, caring personality, creative problem solving and relentless care for her patients and employees. Qualities that made for an invaluable friend and business partner. We knew that it only made sense to combine our practices so that we could serve the entire Shenandoah Valley and beyond. Valley Orthotics & Prosthetics was created!
To us, the work that we do is more than just a job. It is a calling. It is how we have been called to use the gifts given to us, to bring healing and peace to our neighbors.
Our mission statement says: In response to our calling in life, we strive to restore mobility and function through the fabrication and fitting of high-quality braces and prosthetic limbs for any who seek our services. We are most satisfied when our patients have reached their goals.
We understand that there are many prosthetic and orthotic professionals in VA. If you are unsure about who you should pick to have your prosthetic and orthotic needs met, we highly recommend that you interview as many professionals in your area to see who would be a good match. These appointments should be free of charge to you.
We are waiting and ready to listen to your story…
